Striker situation in the summer
|
How many should we be shifting in or out? I think you can make a good case for all of them, or (this could be unpopular) all of them except Arnautovic. Regardless of what names could come in, how do we handle the players currently on the books? Not discussing Silva. Don’t think it’s fair on him and he’s definitely staying anyway.
Carroll- finished. Waste of a squad space Perez- 99% ineffective. Waste of a squad space. Hugill- never a prem player. Just give him away and put the whole episode behind us. Hernandez- can’t lead the line or play effectively for whole games. Definitely has his merits as a situational player just like yesterday, but I can’t help but feel he’s a luxury we can’t afford given his wages. I like him and he undoubtedly knows where the goal is but I just don’t think he’s worth his massive wages. Not against him staying but we clearly need to buy a number 1 striker if he does.
Arnautovic- way off the boil since the drama. Injury? Attitude? Is he off in the summer anyway? However, there’s no doubt that he’s our best and most complete striker by a distance and we realistically can not ditch ALL of them in one summer.
If it were up to me, I’d keep one of them. Most likely Arnie as if he plays to his potential again then he’s a nightmare for defenders, an all round beast, and a match winner. Second choice Hernandez. None of the others.
What would you do if you were calling the shots?

I would shift everbody except Hernandez and use him as a supersub like he is supposed to be used.
Buy Maxi Gomez or a similar caliber of player as the main striker and a back up striker from south america El Pel Sulley special and one of the high scoring lads in the championship as back up strikers.

Hernandez doesn't want to start as a sub though , that's why he wants to leave

But who would take him on the wages he has here?
But if they can shift him then great then we have more to spend on the back up strikers

You can't have a super sub on 140 bags a week.

Couple concerns about moving Hernandez
1) Are we going to find someone who will pay that money or will he take a significant pay cut? If Hernandez wants to take a pay cut to go be a guaranteed starter I respect that.
2) Part of the reason I think we have been so inconsistent is because we replaced so much of the team and have had to do something similar because of injuries. We should be replacing all the other actual strikers and having some continuity would be important. We have players to give him service that will be here next year but also as we have seen when teams are able to bully us, he is next to useless.
Was it a poor contract to give? Yes.
Despite that does he have something to contribute next year? Also yes.

You can easily be a super sub for that money if you are consistently super and making the difference when you come on as it would mean extra wins/points etc. Whether Hernandez is that is another discussion.

Get rid of all of them and buy 3. Promote xande silva to 4th choice

Yesterday is a prime example of why you keep Hernandez if you can. Yeah he's expensive but he's also really good at scoring goals.
Arnie can fuck off now, played like a prick since the chinks came knocking, the no ambition cunt.
Carroll can similarly fuck off, when he's not completely broken he's either coming back from injury or carrying a knock. Doesn't have the skill to be in this squad. Plus he's a pisstaking cunt.
Hugill is as good as gone, a bizarre purchase.
Perez is tidy but completely ineffective. I'd get rid.
Looks like we need to spend some dough in the summer to replace potentially all of those strikers, plus a class centre mid.

Vexed, agree about Hernandez, would be worth keeping him as one of our strikers, absolutely.
If even for some kind of consistency as replacing all 4 strikers would mean 3-4 new strikers having to settle in with a new club and his new teammates.
I just can't see Hernandez wanting to sit on the bench for us much more. There have been noises since he joined that he wasn't happy so I wouldn't be surprised if he wanted out this summer.

even when he's not wearing his nappy, i don't think arnie is the answer.
for leading the line with only a stray centreback to contend with, he can do the business, but he can't find the space in a packed box or play the percentages without getting fed up like a top striker can.
he's was far more suited to moyes's direct anti football than he his a team that patiently tries to carve out chances.

We should try and sell the whole bunch. Inevitably we'll get stuck with one or more of them. I just don't think any are really fit for purpose at this stage. Disappointing outcome, but there it is.

I actually agree with Alex V. Shocking!
Arnies attitude is dreadful and hes not trying.
If one stays, I would rather it be Chico

I'd completely forgotten about Hughill.
Keep Chica, get rid of the rest.

I'd like to see Pea stay, not bothered about the rest unless Arnie gets his fucking head sorted out of course

Annoyingly arnie is the best all round sort of forward we’re likely to get - he’s tricky, strong, no slouch, comfortable with his back to goal but loves running at players and can finish and head too
But he’s a mardy twat - though if he wasn’t, he’s be at a champions league club
Carroll can go (I’m done if he doesn’t !!) Hugill needs to go (I can’t think where though) Perez can go (I’d imagine back to Spain) Hernandez I’d be ok to keep - you have to weigh up selling him against what we’d realistically get in to replace him for the same money. I’d only sell him if his wages prohibit us getting someone brilliant
We need three strikers realistically and I don’t know if replacing the lot is the right way to go. I’d hope that we’ve got some names lined up already and have an idea what we want - ideally arnie mark 2

Wise words there IMO.
Arnautovic is a converted wide man and has not spent his career as a leading striker as far as I know? He had a very good 12 months in the role, it got interrupted by greed, injury and now he is struggling to recapture it. But like you say, now we play less direct he needs to be more patient and not forgetting teams are now aware of him and press him far more than before.
In other words, he may find it hard to ever be as effective as he was unless he is prepared to listen, adapt and generally think about the team first. He won't more than likely so I would take 35 million were it on offer again. In fact, in hindsight we should have let him go but I realise the message it gave that we would crumble anytime a decent bid came in for our players, ( selling club etc) would have been bad for the long term.
We need a striker or two in the mould of those boys over at Arsenal. Hernandez will find ot hard to get the money he is on and is worth keeping on IMO.

I should have added that an overriding problem is that all our strikers are getting on. All around 30. Alex V is right on that. Buying older means experience and track record but also high wages and poor sell on value which then prevents the ability to trade and get replacements etc..

Chicharito is not a top 6 striker and should be allowed to go if we get a decent offer but he's a super sub. Not a top 6 striker.
Arnie isn't either although had he hit pre-January form when he was younger he could well have made it but he doesn't finish well enough. I don't really mind whether he stays or goes.
No-one else we have is up to it either including Antonio, Carroll, Perez and presumably Yarmelenko and Anderson will stay.
I haven't seen this Maxi Gomez we are apparently after but I think we need to find two strikers that are fast mobile and find the net regularly otherwise we won't progress.
